Should I Hire an Amazing Cardiff Brand Designer or Do It Myself?

An honest answer from a brand designer with over 22 years of experience helping businesses grow, reposition and stand out.

If you’ve found yourself asking whether you should hire a brand designer or create your own logo and branding, you’re not alone.

With tools like Canva, AI logo generators and freelance marketplaces offering logos for £50, it’s never been easier to create something that looks like a brand.

But here’s the real question:

Will it help your business grow?

After more than two decades working with businesses of all sizes, from startups to established companies looking to reposition themselves, I’ve discovered that the answer isn’t always straightforward.

Sometimes DIY branding is perfectly acceptable.

Sometimes it’s one of the most expensive mistakes a business can make.

The Truth About Branding

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that branding is simply about logos, colours and fonts.

It’s not.

Those are the visible outputs.

A professional branding process starts long before a logo is designed.

Before I even think about putting pen to paper, I want to understand:

  • Where do you want your business to be in three years?
  • What makes you different from competitors?
  • What are your core values?
  • Who are your ideal customers?
  • What do customers currently think about your business?
  • What opportunities are you trying to pursue?

I’ll often run workshops exploring the history of the business, competitor positioning, customer perception, colour psychology, future aspirations and market opportunities.

The logo is the result of that process. It isn’t the process itself.

Why So Many DIY Brands Miss The Mark

Over the years, I’ve seen countless business owners create their own branding.

The biggest mistake isn’t poor design. The biggest mistake is designing for themselves instead of their customers.

Business owners often choose colours because they’re their favourite colour. They choose logos because they personally like them.

They create branding that reflects their own tastes rather than what their audience needs to see.

Unfortunately, your favourite colour isn’t necessarily your best business colour. The colours, typography and visual identity should support your positioning, communicate your expertise and help you stand out from competitors.

Your customers don’t care whether you like the logo. They care whether they trust your business.

“But I Can Get A Logo On Fiverr For £50”

You absolutely can. And for some businesses, that’s enough. The problem isn’t the logo itself. The problem is what isn’t happening.

A £50 logo designer isn’t researching your competitors. They’re not exploring your long-term business goals. They’re not analysing your market. They’re not helping define your positioning.

A poor logo designer isn’t asking:

  • What makes you unique?
  • What makes customers choose you?
  • Where is the business heading?
  • What opportunities are you trying to create?

They’re designing a graphic. A professional brand designer is building a business tool. That’s a very different service.

When DIY Branding Is Fine

Contrary to what some agencies will tell you, not every business needs a full branding project.

There are situations where DIY branding is perfectly reasonable.

If you’re:

  • Testing a new idea
  • Launching a side project
  • Validating a business concept
  • Operating in a niche where referrals drive most of your work

Then getting started quickly is often more important than having the perfect brand. I’ve even advised clients against investing in branding immediately.

Why?

Because branding wasn’t their biggest problem. In one case, a business needed a stronger marketing strategy before anything else.

Rather than investing heavily in a rebrand, we focused on Meta Ads, Google Ads and improving landing page conversions. The result was an immediate uplift in enquiries and sales.

Only after that foundation was established did it make sense to revisit the brand.

When You Should Hire A Brand Designer

Professional branding becomes far more valuable when your business needs to:

  • Stand out in a crowded market
  • Reach new audiences
  • Increase market share
  • Reposition itself
  • Enter new markets
  • Raise perceived value
  • Compete against established competitors

At this stage, branding becomes less about aesthetics and more about commercial performance. You’re no longer creating something that looks nice. You’re creating something that helps people choose you.

A Real Example

One estate agency approached me with a logo that had been created by the business owner. The issue wasn’t that it looked outdated. The issue was that it wasn’t doing its job.

The branding didn’t communicate what the business actually did. It didn’t differentiate them from competitors.

It didn’t help them stand out in a highly competitive market.

Following a complete rebrand, the business experienced:

  • Improved market visibility
  • Increased market share
  • Better website conversions
  • Expansion into new markets
  • Faster business growth

The logo changed. But more importantly, the perception of the business changed. That’s where the real value was created.

The Hidden Danger Of Success

One thing I’ve noticed repeatedly is that successful businesses often ignore branding problems. When enquiries are flowing and profits are increasing, nobody worries about the logo. Why would they? The business appears healthy. The problem usually surfaces when growth begins to slow.

That’s when business owners start asking difficult questions:

  • Why aren’t we standing out?
  • Why are competitors gaining ground?
  • Why aren’t we attracting the right customers?
  • Why aren’t our marketing campaigns performing as well as they used to?

Sometimes the answer lies in the brand. Not because the logo is old.

But because the business has evolved while the branding has remained stuck in the past. I’ve also seen businesses discover new opportunities that completely change their direction.

A company might start in one market and accidentally find success in another. Suddenly the original branding no longer reflects who they are or where they’re heading.

What’s More Important Than Branding?

This may surprise you coming from a brand designer. Sometimes branding isn’t the first investment you should make.

If a business has no customer acquisition strategy, no paid advertising and no lead generation process, I’d often prioritise those first.

A strong Meta Ads campaign. Well-structured Google Ads. Landing pages that convert. These can create results almost immediately.

After all:

A beautiful brand without customers is still a struggling business.

Branding should support business growth. It shouldn’t replace it.

So, Should You Hire A Brand Designer Or Do It Yourself?

If you’re just getting started, testing an idea or need something to help you launch, doing it yourself can be absolutely fine. Perfection isn’t always the priority. Progress is.

However, if you’re operating in a competitive market, trying to attract new customers, reposition your business or build long-term growth, professional branding becomes a business investment rather than a design expense.

The reality is that many of your competitors have already invested in their brand, marketing and customer perception.

They’re researching their audience. They’re refining their positioning. They’re working hard to stand out.

If you’re relying solely on a logo you’ve created because you personally like it, there’s a good chance you’re making branding decisions based on preference rather than strategy.

Before making your decision, ask yourself one question:

Is my brand helping my business get where it needs to be in the next three years, or is it simply something I created because I liked it?

Your answer will usually tell you whether it’s time to hire a professional.
